For the last few months, we have been working on the design and construction of a fish pass on the side-spill weir at Trews weir on the River Exe in Exeter. The fish pass is being built as part of the large Environment Agency project to upgrade the Exeter Flood Defence Scheme, with the principle contractor Kier. Fishtek were awarded the contract for the fish pass on a design and build basis and have worked hard with Castleford Engineering to construct a best practice fish pass that is also cost-effective.
The final design of pass that is being built is a two-flight Larinier, with the flights fabricated from galvanised steel and then clad with oak to ensure that the finished pass is aesthetically pleasing. Between the two Larinier flights is a resting pool cast from concrete. This is designed in so that fish moving upstream through the fish pass have a place to rest between the two steep flights of Larinier pass. A few pictures of the pass during construction are below:
