As our rivers in the UK continue to improve, through the removal of barriers and improvements in habitat and water quality, fish are responding to the positive changes in their environment. It is heartening to hear that salmon have recently been found in the River Calder. We designed a fish pass for a significant tributary of the Calder, the River Brun, construction of which has recently finished. The weir on which the pass is situated was previously a complete barrier to fish migration, as the photo below clearly shows.
As populations of salmon hopefully continue to improve in the river system, they should start to make their way up into the Brun. If and when they do, their upstream passage will be facilitated by the new fish pass.
