BBC Radio Shropshire has captured some excellent footage of salmon jumping at a weir in Shropshire. Follow this link to see the action! The video highlights the impact that barriers have on river connectivity and particularly on the spawning migrations of our migratory species. Much of the spawning habitat in rivers like the Severn is found in the headwaters and smaller tributaries and barriers to migration can severely impact the ability of fish to reach this habitat and spawn. In order to improve river connectivity and enhance fish populations it is crucial that we mitigate these structures using strategies such as weir removal and the installation of best practice fish passes. No one barrier is the same and each requires a different approach. Fishtek prides itself in having an experienced team of fisheries biologists and engineers that have the knowledge and experience to find best practice solutions at various types of barriers.
