Fishtek Consulting were recently commissioned by the Severn Rivers Trust and the Environment Agency to assess the damage caused by high flows to a recently installed bypass fish pass at Prescott Weir, on the River Rea in Shropshire. The previous design and installation (which Fishtek were not involved in) was not sufficiently robust to stand up to the high flows experience in the river and as a result, we designed a robust scheme to enhance and replace the existing fish pass, based upon our assessment of the causes of failure in the previous pass.
Castleford Engineering were sub-contracted to carry out the works and the completed fish pass is shown in the photographs below. By spring of next year, vegetation will have returned to the works area and the bypass fish pass will meld into the surrounding environment and continue to provide for improved fish passage for years to come.
