We have just started a large R&D project, investigating the effectiveness of potential solutions to improve eel passage at gauging weirs. Two different versions of a potential solution, one installed directly onto the face of the weir and one recessed into the face of the weir, have been installed on a gauging station in the Severn catchment.
In order to monitor the movement of eels over the weir and effectiveness of the two solutions, pit-tag loops and cameras have been set up. These will be able to determine the route over the weir which each eel took as well as the efficiency of each of the two solutions for improving eel passage past the weir.
Below are a couple of images of the installed cameras and pit-tag loops. Watch this space for information about the results of the work!
